Job Summary
Under general supervision is responsible for the direct provision of library services; planning, presenting, and evaluating library programming, including providing specialized reference service, reader’s advisory instruction, and assistance to researchers of local history and genealogy. Conducts outreach in community venues, including senior centers and community groups to actively promote the use of the library’s Texana/Genealogy Special Collections, its resources, services, and system-wide initiatives related to the Unit. Facilitates collection maintenance, planning, and preservation of the Texana/Genealogy special collections under the Library’s Special Collections Manager. May exercise functional supervision over assigned staff.

Essential Job Functions
Assists the general public with information regarding library materials and equipment.
Participates in library committee work, library-wide committees, and task forces.
Maintains and selects library materials on the basis of established criteria and the needs of the users; assists with the creation and delivery of services that address patron research needs on subjects including genealogy, primary sources, and local history.
Promotes use of the library by the community; develops, plans, and implements public programming, training sessions, and outreach activities that are responsive to service-area demographics and community demand.
Promotes the library’s Texana/Genealogy Special Collections, its resources, services, and system-wide initiatives related to the Unit for adult services in the library system and local community.
Provides direct reference service to the public, including assistance with research inquiries involving genealogy, local history, archives, and special collections
Works on Texana/Genealogy projects surrounding collection management, preservation, development, digitization, and archival access/retrieval.
Responsible for the physical arrangement, preservation, and display of special collections.
Assists with creation of exhibits for gallery display and outreach activities.
Assists with digitization of special collections and creates associated metadata (structural, administrative, and descriptive).
Conducts tours of the Texana/Genealogy department, including overview of Unit’s services.
Serves as a Holdings Editor for Unit to perform routine catalog maintenance work.
Serves as a volunteer liaison for the Texana/Genealogy Unit.
Assists with routine opening and/or closing duties for the Texana/Genealogy Unit.
Answers reference questions and performs readers' advisory services.
Prepares and presents programs regarding library services and materials to various age groups.
Answers reference questions and performs readers' advisory services (in-person, by phone, and online).
Works with community partners to deliver off-site services.
Maintains work records and prepares reports; conducts inventory of documents and unprocessed collections and creates finding aids; maintains daily and monthly statistics.
Analyzes, evaluates, and selects materials.
Prepares original cataloging copy for non-specialized materials.
Solves routine classification and cataloging problems.
Reconciles differences in bibliographic records.
Trains staff in policies, procedures, and operation of various automated systems.
May function as Person in Charge of Public Service for Central Library, to serve as Incident Commander for evacuations; handles emergency situations and follows emergency communications protocol.

Job Requirements
Master's Degree in Library Science, Library and Information Studies/Science or Information Studies/Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited university or obtain within six (6) months of hire.
No substitution for education allowed.
Any applicant selected for this position must have a background check completed with results satisfactory to the City of San Antonio and successfully complete the City of San Antonio's Cash-Handling Certification Training.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with genealogy research.
Passion for and desire to work with archives and special collections.
Certification with the Academy of Certified Archivists.
Spanish language proficiency.
Valid Class “C” Texas Driver’s License or obtain a valid Class “C” Texas Driver’s License within thirty (30) days after becoming a resident of the State of Texas.

Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.
