Position Title: Archivist

Department: Library Information and Technology Services

Reports to: Director of Strategic Collection

FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt/37.5 Hours per Week

Rate of Pay: $23 per hour

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Archivist oversees the ongoing operations of the Asbury Seminary Archives and develops special collections to provide additional significant historical materials in support of the research needs of the Seminary community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Maintains and develops the Asbury Seminary Archival collections
In accordance with the Seminary’s Collection Development Plan, identifies potential materials for inclusion in the Seminary Archives and Special Collections.
Works to acquire materials thus identified.
Arrange included materials within the Archives storage spaces for best preservation and access.
Effectively describes included materials for later display and access.
Oversees Preservation
Ensures the accurate appraisal of collected materials.
Maintains the appropriate storage conditions for material longevity as resources will allow.
Oversees the digitization of collected media and manuscript material as appropriate.
Facilitates the work of relevant researchers in person and online
Provides primary point of contact to researchers working with archived material and special collections.
Prepares finding aids for use by researchers to assist in identifying and accessing collected material.
Provides reference services to researchers concerning archived material.
Furthers awareness of Special Collections and Archived material
Coordinates promotional and informative displays of special collections and archived ephemera.
Uploads digitized materials to online repositories as appropriate.
SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides direct supervision of Special Collections student workers and volunteers.
FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY/AUTHORITY:
Manages funding/funds from archival collections that are on deposit at the Seminary Archives.
 
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
Cooperates with colleagues in other organizations for the advancement of scholarship and effective utilization of resources.
Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION, SKILLS AND ABILITIES, EXPERIENCE:
Professional archival degree or Certified Achivist perferred
A minimum of five years’ experience in the management, arrangement, and description of archives and special collections.
Have a working knowledge of Anglo-American Cataloging rules, Library of Congress subject headings, Library of Congress classification tables, and MARC monograph and manuscript formats.
Have a working knowledge of digitization rules and processes.
A strong public services approach and outlook as part of a team of professionals.
Commitment to assessment and continuous quality improvement.
Effective interpersonal, communication, presentation, and organizational skills.
Ability to manage multiple projects, shift priorities and cope with ambiguity and change.
Ability to maintain confidence due to the sensitive nature of some materials.
