DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Houston Public Library seeks creative, innovative, and highly customer service-oriented Librarian I to serve at the Houston History Research Center (HHRC). Houston Public Library serves a population of 2.2 million citizens through a network of 37 Neighborhood Libraries spread out across the Houston area, a Central Library, and three Special Collections Libraries.
 

The Houston History Research Center (HHRC), located in the historic Julia Ideson Building, includes archival, Texas and local history, and special collections components with the primary objectives of locating, preserving, and making available to researchers the documentary evidence of Houston's history. HHRC's varied collections include 40,000 Texas and local history books, 20,000 adult and juvenile special collections and rare books, 4.5 million photographs, 150,000 architectural drawings, 450 oral histories, various manuscripts, and 8,000 maps. The archival collections focus on non-current records of local groups or individuals who played roles in Houston's development.

The Librarian I (Hispanic Processing) will:
Process archival materials in a variety of formats, including papers, photographs, audiovisual, and born digital materials. This may include collection research, acquisition, cataloging, preservation, and digitization.
Promote Hispanic HHRC materials and the Houston community by planning and participating in programs, including lectures, building tours, curating exhibits, and outreach events.
Provide reference services and research assistance in-person and virtually.
Serves as project manager for digitization projects, including assessing and preparing collections for digitization, directing, and overseeing the scanning and metadata creation process, and approving the final online presentation.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Position requires stooping and bending; lifting of library materials up to 20 pounds. Must be able to move freely throughout the library to file/retrieve library materials. Must be able to effectively communicate orally and in writing.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Requires a Master of Library Science degree from a school accredited by the American Library Association (ALA). No experience is required.
OR
Requires a Bachelor's degree plus 18 hours toward a Master of Library Science degree from a school accredited by ALA and one (1) year of library experience providing reference and programming. A Master of Library Science must be completed within two (2) years of being hired into this classification.

Experience in library programming
Comfortable working with diverse populations.
Strong interpersonal, communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Ability to motivate, develop, train and direct staff in a collaborative team environment.
Knowledge of current trends in library services to youth and their parents and caregivers.
Experience using the MS Office Suite and knowledge of electronic devices such as e-readers and tablets and other technologies.
Bilingual (Spanish and English) preferred.
Knowledge, work experience, or advanced study courses in archival science, history, or museum studies. Current computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop. Familiarity with standards including Dublin Core, EAD, and MARC-AMC, as well as experience with CONTENTdm and ArchivesSpace is highly preferred. Experience with digitization, processing born digital archival materials, and working with audiovisual materials also preferred. Special training in the archivist fields and/or a Certified Archivist (C.A.) is also preferred. Customer/Public service experience and ability to plan and organize work is a plus.
