Job Summary
Under general direction, performs a wide range of professional library work independently and in accordance with general policies and accepted professional practices. Is responsible for the direct provision of library services; planning, presenting, and evaluating library programming, including providing specialized reference service, reader’s advisory instruction, and assistance to researchers of local history and genealogy. Assists with management and care of archival collections, planning and preservation of the Texana/Genealogy Special Collections under the Library’s Special Collections Manager. The advanced difficulty of work assignments and the greater independence with which work is performed differentiates this class from the Librarian I class. May directly supervise assigned staff.

Hours vary based on departmental needs; Saturday-Friday workweek; weekend and evening availability required.
Essential Job Functions
Interprets Federal and State library laws and explains City and departmental policies and procedures to the public and staff.
Develops, plans, and implements public programming, training sessions, and outreach activities that are responsive to service-area demographics and community demand.
Investigates and resolves complaints involving the public and staff.
May serve as Assistant Manager for the Central Library Unit; assumes the responsibilities of a branch or section head in their absence.
Provides direct reference service to the public; assist with research inquiries involving archival materials, genealogy, local history, and special collections.
Participates in library committee work and library-wide committee and task forces.
Conducts meetings, training sessions, and public programs.
Appraises, organizes, processes, and reviews library materials and selects materials according to the needs of users.
Promotes the use of the library by the community; promotes the use of the library’s Texana/Genealogy Special Collections, its resources, services, and system-wide initiatives; works with community partners to deliver off-site services.
Maintains ready reference collections.
Compiles bibliographies, reference guides, newsletter articles, statistics and written reports.
Stays abreast of library and archives issues and trends; appraises, organizes, processes archival collections; reviews and selects library materials according to the needs of users.
Engages in long and short-range planning for the work unit; coordinates and supervises special projects and engages in long and short-range planning for the work unit
Monitors use of unit or branch collection or assigned area; assists with maintenance of collection in assigned area.
Assists with the management and care of archival collections, planning and preservation of the Texana/Genealogy Special Collections.
Creates exhibits, digitizes archival material and creates associated metadata.
Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
Job Requirements
Master's Degree in Library Science, Library and Information Studies/Science, or Information Studies/Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited university.
One (1) year of experience as a professional librarian or three (3) years of professional experience relevant to the appropriate age based group.
No substitution for education allowed.
Any applicant selected for this position must have a background check completed with results satisfactory to the City of San Antonio and successfully complete the City of San Antonio's Cash-Handling Certification Training.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with genealogy research.
Experience with archival processing and descriptive practices.
Certification with the Academy of Certified Archivists
Professional experience and/or coursework in digital preservation, digital archives, or related.
High level of initiative and self-motivation.
Supervisory experience.
Valid Class “C” Texas Driver’s License or obtain a valid Class “C” Texas driver’s license within thirty (30) days after becoming a resident of the State of Texas.

Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.
