Purpose
The Briscoe Center for American History seeks a highly skilled and collaborative archivist who will be responsible for the appraisal, acquisition, arrangement, description, preservation and access to the University of Texas Archives, including historically valuable official records of the University, personal and professional papers of faculty and other significant individuals and campus organizations from its history.  In alignment with the Center’s workflows and archival best practices, the University Archivist will manage acquisition of University archival collections, in all formats; create and improve finding aids and other archival documentation of the University archives; and broaden the accessibility of and facilitate research within the University Archives, notably with campus partners. The University of Texas Archivist will report to the Director of UT History.

Responsibilities
Appraise, acquire, arrange, describe, preserve, and provide access to University history related records of enduring and historical value in all formats according to professional standards and best practices.

Identify gaps in the University’s institutional records and collaborate with campus partners, particularly UT Records and Information Management Services, to encourage the timely transfer of institutionally significant materials. Actively seek out and document underrepresented voices, groups, communities, and events across the university and the university’s history.

Meet and communicate with donors and institutional partners to facilitate collection development and the acquisition process, and assist in transferring archival collections to the Center. Pick up university-related archives and collections on campus and in the Austin area, as well as arrange for the transfer of those outside the Austin area (with some occasional travel as needed).

Draft deeds of gift for donors. Write letters of acknowledgment for gifts. Work with Briscoe Center’s development team to process gift paperwork.

Collaborate with digitization unit to facilitate digitization process for selected UT archival materials. 

Recruit, train and supervise student interns.

In conjunction with the University Historian, promote and create awareness of the University Archives by maintaining productive relations with the University community. Facilitate research and provide reference assistance to users of the University Archives collections, notably for campus partners and on behalf of University-wide priorities. Work in compliance with the Texas Public Records Act, UT Records Retention Schedule, FERPA and other legalities that apply to University records.

Participate in center-wide activities and working groups. Work in the reading room regularly and respond to reference inquiries from a wide variety of individuals and entities. 

Collaborate with University Historian in generating work product to promote the archives. Contribute to a range of University history initiatives, including updating online presence for the archives and active promotion of use of the collection.

Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in Library and Information Science/Information Studies with a concentration in archival enterprise. A minimum of two years of archival experience with processing collections, creating finding aids, and producing other collection management tools in a special collections and archives environment. Familiarity with metadata standards relevant to archival collections. Strong commitment to and enjoyment working with donors, students, faculty, and the public. Ability to manage multiple internal and external relationships. Strong time management and organizational skills.  Strong problem-solving skills. Professional demeanor. Excellent skills in Excel and Word.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in history and/or demonstrated knowledge of US History.  Certified archivist designation. Experience processing large archival collections.  Experience with born digital records. Experience making selections for digitization projects or for general curation purposes. Demonstrated ability to manage projects and tasks in a complex and dynamic environment and to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders. Demonstrated initiative and ability to work independently, as well as part of a team. Experience working collaboratively with staff. Successful record of communicating clearly and effectively, in writing and in person. Excellent ability to maintain professional demeanor in all interactions with the public and center personnel, including interactions with a diverse group of individuals at all organizational levels, both inside and outside the University. Demonstrated ability to create solutions and maintain a productive work environment.

Driving Required
This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).

Salary Range
$55,000
