The Wistar Institute has an opening for an Archivist with oversight of the Wistar Archives and its collection of historical objects and documents. These include artifacts from the original Wistar Museum Collection, records and correspondence, Civil War records and ephemera, and records of The Wistar Institute, its institutional leaders, and scientists.
This Archivist position is part time (approximately 20 hours per month) and not benefit eligible.
Duties and responsibilities:
Serve as the institutional point of contact for all internal and external inquiries relating to the Wistar Archives.
Evaluate and preserve records for administrative, historical, legal, and other purposes.
Prepare and maintain record-keeping systems, indexes, guides and procedures for archival research, including developing record cataloguing, coding and classification systems, and monitoring their use.
Identify, examine and classify specimens and objects, and arrange for restoration and preservation work as needed.
Control access to the Wistar Archives and develop procedures for accessing the Wistar Archives.
Manage compliance with federal and local law, including the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act of 1990 (NAGPRA).
Qualifications (required): Master's degree from an American Library Association accredited program or equivalent advanced degree in a related field; or Bachelor's degree with 3-5 years experience in relevant field; or Bachelor's degree with certification by The Academy of Certified Archivists.
Experience Preferred: Professional experience working with special collections, archives records management systems. Experience with archival processing, digitalization and digital preservation. Specific knowledge of or interest in early American history, medical artifacts, specimens, medical and scientific research are a plus but not required.
Specific Knowledge, Skills, or other Qualifications: Knowledge of collection development and management for archives and special collections; archival principles and preservation techniques; and contemporary and emerging digital and archival standards. Excellent organizational, analytical, and oral and written communication abilities. Effective in identifying, assessing, and managing institutional needs for appropriate record-keeping and data management. Ability to build relationships and work collaboratively with faculty, researchers, administrators and other institutional leaders. Ability to work independently, highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of creative problem solving. Committed to the highest ethical and professional standards.
