Overview

Genuinely curious about Vermont's historical records and those who preserve and provide access to them? Have a passion for sharing your knowledge of archival principles, standards, and best practices? The Vermont Historical Records Program (VHRP) of the Vermont State Archives and Records Administration seeks a collaborative, versatile, and service-oriented information professional and self-starter to join our team as a roving archivist.

Ideal candidates at this level have experience working with archival records in a range of formats and demonstrated ability to teach archival principles, standards, and best practices to others. They also have exceptional verbal and written communication skills and are excellent listeners who are curious, interested, and excited to understand and learn more, especially when asked new and challenging questions.

What Will You Do?

Under close mentorship and supervision of the Director of the VHRP, you will provide technical assistance to historical records repositories throughout the state, including historical societies, town clerks, public libraries with local history collections, and community archives.  This assistance typically involves a site visit, written report, and ongoing support for repository staff and volunteers.  The focus is caring for and enhancing access to records, but this can encompass sharing your knowledge of historic preservation, digitization, and digital preservation.  As a member of a two-person program, the roving archivist also works closely with the Director to present workshops and training sessions, promote the VHRP, develop and implement new projects, and support existing statewide collaborations. Duties include regular travel within Vermont.
