Position Description:
Position Summary
The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is a prestigious and diverse research facility that plays a vital role in the study of the universe. At NRAO, we are accepting applications for a full-time Archivist who will be responsible for the care of physical and digital collections including acquiring, organizing, preserving, and facilitating access to the NRAO/Associated Universities Inc. (AUI) archive materials and collections.
This position will be based at our headquarters in Charlottesville, Virginia. In addition to competitive pay, NRAO provides excellent paid time off benefits (vacation and sick leave). Medical, dental and vision plans are effective first day of employment. NRAO’s retirement benefit contributes an amount equal to 10 percent of a qualified participant’s base pay. No contribution is required of the employee; we also offer an optional supplemental, tax-deferred plan for employee retirement contributions.
What You Will Be Doing:
Uses standard archival practices, stewards the Archive’s collection through the acquisition, organization and preservation of institutional records, personal papers, oral histories, film, audio recordings, images and objects of enduring value that document the history of radio astronomy in the United States and the institutional histories of AUI, NRAO and the Green Bank Observatory (GBO).
Processes, digitizes, and creates finding aids. Maintains and upgrades the content management systems and website (with support from IT). Manages relevant outside contracts with technology and other vendors.
Provides reference and research services and works collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders on projects relating to the history of radio astronomy, institutional history and material in the collections, including AUI/NRAO/GBO staff, scientists, students, researchers, writers, donors and the media, in-person and via electronic communication.
Develops and manages the archive's strategy, priorities and budget. Supervises, evaluates, hires and trains staff and/or volunteers, as needed.

Position Requirements:
Minimum Education
Bachelor's degree.
Minimum Experience
A minimum of four years of experience in a library or archives.
Preferred Education
Master's degree in library science or related degree.
Preferred Experience
Administrative experience
Knowledge in the field of astronomy or radio astronomy
Certification from the Academy of Certified Archivists or Digital Archivist Specialist certificate from the Society of American Archivists
Computer Skills
Proficient in Microsoft Office suite with demonstrated efficiency in Outlook, PowerPoint and Word
Adobe, web-based applications experience
Experience with archival and content management systems including Word Press, Omeka, Archive-It and ePadd
Familiarity with web archiving and digitization standards
Competency Summary
Comprehensive knowledge of standard archives practices, procedures, equipment, and administrative techniques.
Ability to develop and maintain knowledge of current and evolving standards, guidelines, tools and best practices regarding acquisition, appraisal, processing and describing materials for the collection.
Excellent management, organization and communication skills.

Additional Requirement
While performing the duties of this job, the employee typically sits at a desk, uses a personal computer, telephone, photocopier, facsimile, and other standard office equipment. The employee may occasionally drive a vehicle, lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee frequently is required to communicate in person, by electronic mail, and by telephone. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus. Manual dexterity required to manipulate paper documents.
