The Briscoe Center for American History is one of the nation’s leading research centers for historical study. The center’s archives, libraries, museums, and historic buildings are part of The University of Texas at Austin’s commitment to collecting, preserving, and making available the evidence of the past.
The center’s exhibit spaces, classrooms, and Reading Room are located on The University of Texas at Austin campus. The center also operates the Briscoe–Garner Museum in Uvalde, Texas; the Sam Rayburn Museum in Bonham, Texas; and Winedale, a research collection of nineteenth-century structures, material culture, and decorative arts located near Round Top, Texas.
The Briscoe Center promotes the university’s teaching and research mission through classes and seminars, academic fellowships, faculty collaborations, and student internships. The center fosters public exploration of history through research services, exhibits, books, public programs, and digital humanities projects inspired by archival holdings.
Purpose
The Briscoe Center for American History seeks a highly collaborative Audiovisual Archivist who will provide leadership and responsibility for the appraisal, processing, preservation, description, digitization of and access to audiovisual materials in a variety of formats.
Responsibilities
Digitize and create metadata for audio and moving image (AV) materials.
Create inventories of AV materials and integrate into ArchivesSpace.
Survey AV materials for preservation issues, and perform repairs or make recommendations for external vendors.
Document and maintain legacy playback and digitization equipment, source replacement equipment, and source vendors for digitization of formats not available in-house.
Meet and communicate with donors to facilitate collection development and acquisition process and assist in transferring archival collections to the Center, with some occasional travel as needed and provide outreach to a variety of stakeholders including visitors and UT classes.
Provide reference support, including service on reference desk in reading room, providing playback for items not viewable in the reading room and answering AV related reference queries.
Recruit, train and supervise interns and volunteers.
Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Masters degree in Information Science, Information Studies, History or other closely related field with a concentration in archival enterprise.
1-2 years working with audiovisual material in an archival setting.
Strong technical expertise with audiovisual formats and playback equipment in a library or cultural heritage organization.
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with audiovisual stewardship issues, tools, standards, and best practices.
Familiarity with metadata standards relevant to archival and audiovisual collections.
Demonstrated commitment to a collaborative work environment.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
Certified archivist designation.
Demonstrated experience working with aging audiovisual media/equipment and digital media/devices.
Ability to determine preservation priorities and expertly perform preservation best practices for a wide range of analog audiovisual materials.
Experience troubleshooting to solve technical problems.
Strong organizational and project management skills.
Experience designing and managing complex projects.
Experience leading collaborative initiatives in a highly distributed environment.
Experience working in a Drupal and Islandora environment.
Experience working with third party vendors.
Demonstrated ability to create solutions for problems, negotiate difficult situations, motivate staff, and maintain a productive harmonious work environment.
Ability to embrace ambiguity in a changing environment and be committed to continual professional development, improvement and learning.
Supervisory experience.
Driving Required
This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).

Retirement Plan Eligibility:
The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
