Position Summary:
WLM is a related organization of ASA. The mission of the Wood Library-Museum of Anesthesiology (WLM) is to “Advance Anesthesiology by Preserving and Sharing its Heritage and Knowledge.”
The WLM Archivist and Librarian is responsible for the care of the WLM's archives and library collections in all formats, including paper and electronic records, audio-visual and other materials, books, and journals. Maintains these collections and their documentation in good order and makes them available for use in accordance with professional ethics and standards.
Primary Position Responsibilities:
· Acquire and document assets, including organizational records, personal papers, and ephemera, books, and journals. Identify collecting desiderata, encourage in-kind gifts and acknowledge donors. Initiate and maintain ongoing collecting agreements with organizations in the specialty of anesthesiology. Create and maintain records of the provenance, status, condition, and location of the collection, on- and off-site. Accession all archival materials received, including purchases, gifts, and loans. Pursue documentation of ownership and oversee related deaccessions according to professional guidelines.
· Implement and follow professional guidelines for the preservation (storage and handling) and conservation (stabilization and repair) of the collection. Rehouse materials as needed to promote their longevity. Recommend and/or implement digital preservation standards and data migration as needed.
· Conduct physical and intellectual processing of the collection in accordance with professional standards. Write finding aids to the collection and make them available through appropriate use of digital technologies. Promote awareness and use of the collection through the WLM website, social media and cooperative efforts with peer institutions and related organizations.
· Provide reference and research services to ASA, its constituents, and affiliates, as well as to scholars and the public. Assist WLM Fellows and other visitors; oversee and document their use of the collection. Conduct and document tours as required. Prioritize these services according to the needs of ASA and WLM, and in accordance with the policies and procedures of ASA's legal counsel.
· Assist in selection and implementation of new technologies for improved access to the collection.
· Assist in WLM Board of Trustees meetings and WLM participation in ASA Meetings. Write quarterly and other reports as needed for the use of WLM's Director and Board of Trustees.
· Assist in the development of new exhibits and other projects as assigned.
· Collaborate with WLM coworkers and other ASA departments.
Position Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in Archival Science, or in Library and Information Science with archival coursework, or equivalent credential such as Certified Archivist preferred.
· Minimum 3 years of experience as an Archivist required.
· Knowledge of archives, library, and museum professional standards.
· Knowledge of current laws, methodologies, and technologies appropriate to archives, libraries, and museums.
· Active membership in related professional societies a plus.
· Proficiency in text and image digitization software.
· Demonstrate personal integrity in interactions with vendors, contractors and in communications with members, staff, and the public.
· Excellent communication and negotiation skills in working with administrators, members, donors, and vendors.
