Position: Archivist I or II
Starting Pay Rate: $20.19 – $27.60 hourly DOQ
Terms of Employment: Full time (40 hours/week)

Rosenberg Library seeks a motivated, engaged, and customer-service oriented Archivist I or Archivist II to work at the library’s Galveston and Texas History Center (GTHC). The GTHC, one of the main repositories for Texana in the United States, collects materials about Galveston from its 1839 incorporation to the present and documents Texas from the Spanish period through the Civil War. Our collection embraces more than 13,000 linear feet — two and a half miles — of written, visual, and oral materials.
The Archivist is responsible for assisting customers and researchers with reference questions; processing and cataloging manuscripts, maps, photos, and other materials; supporting digitization efforts; helping supervise and train interns and volunteers; and assisting the Special Collections Manager with public programs, exhibits, and publications. Position reports to the Special Collections Manager.
Duties for this position include but are not limited to the following:
Provides archival reference and research services for users needing archival materials.
Organizes, processes, and conserves archival and/or library collections, including creating digital surrogates of archival items.
Compiles and creates finding aids and reference guides according to current archival standards (EAD, DACS, etc.) so that information is accessible.
Provides public liaison activities including tours, lectures, media appearances and interviews.
Assists in planning exhibits by organizing and interpreting historical records for public presentation.
Key Qualifications:
Professional work experience in an archive, research library, or manuscript repository preferred.
Evidence of strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment.
Knowledge of the reference process and ability to oversee onsite researchers and answer requests for information from internal and external sources.
Experience with accessioning and processing manuscript materials in accordance with archival standards.
Knowledge of current trends and practices in digital management of collection materials.
Experience using a collections management database, such as ArchivEra.
Ability to perform physical tasks, including climbing a ladder and lifting up to forty (40) pounds.
Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds.
Effective communication skills in Spanish preferred.
Minimum Qualifications:
For Archivist I:
Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA accredited university, with specialization in archival administration or Master’s Degree in History/Public History with coursework in archival administration.
For Archivist II:
Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA accredited university, with specialization in archival administration or Master’s Degree in History/Public History with coursework in archival administration.
Three (3) years professional experience working in an archive, library, museum, or other cultural heritage institution.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience supervising staff, interns, and/or volunteers.
Certification from the Academy of Certified Archivists.
Terms of Employment:
Full time commensurate with a comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, and life insurance, an employer-sponsored 401K, 15 vacation days (increases to 20 days after three years), 12 paid holidays, and 12 sick days per year.
Employment is contingent on passing a background check.
