Assistant Processing Archivist (Part-time}

The George Mason University, Special Collections Research Center invites applications for an Assistant Processing Archivist who will support the Special Collections Research Center's goals in processing university archives and manuscript archival collections and making them accessible.

About the Position:

The Assistant Processing Archivist position is responsible for specifically processing complex and specialized duties as follows:

Apply current best practices to managing processing projects; survey collections; create processing plans; arrange and describe archival collections; and
Create EAD-compliant finding aids using ArchivesSpace; initiate and respond to complex communications in carrying out daily operations in person, in writing, via telephone and e-mail and social media tools and participate within SCRC in working groups and committees as appropriate.
Responsibilities:
Responsible for processing and creating access to university archives and manuscript archival collections in collaboration with and under the supervision of the Manuscripts and Archives Librarian;
Provides accurate metadata using the ArchivesSpace database;
Assures appropriate handling, physical housing, and storage of collection materials. Identifies and refers items as necessary for preservation;
Participates in the professional life of the Libraries and the University; and
Reports processing-related statistics throughout the year and in the annual report.
Required Qualifications:
ALA accredited MLS/MLIS with archives concentration from an ALA accredited program or, concentration in archives or certification in archives (such as Certified Archivist) combined with graduate degree in history or related discipline; or foreign equivalent; or equivalent experience;
Experience in project management;
Experience in archival processing (appraisal, arrangement and description);
Experience with multiple formats, including textual, visual, audio, both analog and digital;
Familiarity with DACS and EAD;
Demonstrated knowledge of current archival theory, practice, and standards;
Ability to build collaborative and mutually beneficial working relationships with people of varying backgrounds;
Ability to thrive in a team-based environment and work collaboratively;
Demonstrated commitment to professional development and growth;
Proficient organizational skills and highly detail-oriented; and
Effective written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working in a special collections' environment in a university setting;
Experience processing large archival collections;
Familiarity with preservation and conservation issues and practices; and
Familiarity with ArchivesSpace collections management software, LCSH, LCTGM.
Salary: $25.00 -$27.50/Commensurate with education and experience.
