DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Houston Public Library seeks creative, innovative, and highly customer service-oriented Hispanic Collections Archivist to serve at the Houston Metropolitan Research Center (HMRC). Houston Public Library serves a population of 2.2 million citizens through a network of 37 Neighborhood Libraries spread out across the Houston area, a Central Library, and three Special Collections Libraries.
The Houston Metropolitan Research Center (HMRC), located in the historic Julia Ideson Building, includes archival, Texas and local history, and special collections components with the primary objectives of locating, preserving, and making available to researchers the documentary evidence of Houston's history.
Essential job duties and responsibilities for the Archivist II (Hispanic Collections Archivist) include:
Manage assigned HMRC archival collections, including the entire Hispanic archival collection component. Activities include processing, collection care, and reproduction according to best practices and standards. This may include acquisition, cataloging, and digitization.
Develop policy, procedures, and workflows for the audiovisual materials.
Provide specialized reference services and research assistance to the general public in-person, on the phone, and via email with a special focus on the Hispanic collections-based reference service.
Contribute to HMRC’s programming efforts by conducting departmental tours, leading programs, participating in outreach efforts, and representing the library and HMRC at public events.
Work collaboratively with other HPL staff to manage, preserve, and make available non-image audiovisual materials and media types in HMRC’s holdings.
Assist in grant writing for Hispanic collections and audiovisual materials and participates in grant-funded projects as needed.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The position occasionally requires stooping or bending. Occasional very light lifting, such as three or four reams of papers or books (up to 20 pounds or an equivalent weight) may be required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Requires an ALA accredited Master's degree in Library Science or a Master’s degree in History or a related field and one (1) year experience in archival processing, archival collecting, historical research, reference, programming, or a related field.
OR
Requires a Bachelor’s degree plus 18 hours toward an ALA accredited Master’s degree in Library Science or 18 hours toward a Master’s in History or a related field and two (2) years of experience in archival processing, archival collecting, historical research, reference, programming, or a related field. A Master’s degree must be completed within two (2) years from being hired into this classification.

PREFERENCES
PREFERENCES
Knowledge, work experience, or advanced study courses in archival science, history or museum studies.
Current computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop.
Familiarity with standards including Dublin Core, EAD, and MARC-AMC, as well as experience with CONTENTdm and ArchivesSpace is highly preferred.
Familiar with copyright/digital copyright law, fair use, and ethical considerations when creating reproductions in an archives setting.
Possesses sufficient knowledge to identify at-risk materials and the preservation needs of audiovisual collections.
Experience with digitization, processing born digital archival materials, and working with audiovisual materials also preferred.
Special training in the archivist fields and/or a Certified Archivist (C.A.) is also preferred.
Customer/Public service experience and ability to plan and organize work is a plus.
Bilingual skills in Spanish preferred.
