Digitizer-Archivist (Library Professional 1/2)
What You Will Do

Come join a new team of staff that will be working to organize, digitize, and catalog one of the most mission-critical physical collections at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). You will be on a new team, deployed to the Weapons Production Directorate, working for the Weapons Research Services - Secure Information Services Group. The information you organize, digitize, and catalog will have an immediate impact to the Laboratory's mission.

You will be working in coordination with one of the largest libraries in the Federal Government, the National Security Research Center (NSRC). The NSRC is LANL's classified library, containing tens of millions of documents, films, books, and other archival material related to the development, testing and production of nuclear weapons, dating back to the first days of the Manhattan Project. The NSRC's collections contain a breadth of classified technical information related to physics, chemistry, engineering, material science, intelligence, and national security.

Library Professional 1 ($59,500-$93,100)

As a Library Professional 1 you will digitize the Weapons Production's physical collections. This includes digitizing media such as paper, microfilm, microfiche, motion picture film, video, and others. You will also enter metadata and indexing information about the digitized material that will be used to develop a robust catalog, provide quality control for the digitized materials, and upload digitized material and associated catalog information into the Online Vault database. You will also assist the Archivist in accessioning new material into the NSRC's collections and assist with customer research requests.

Library Professional 2 ($72,800-$115,500)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you will be creating metadata/indexing information and a robust catalog in collaboration with the NSRC Digital Collections Team Leader to assist in the retrieval of the material. You will provide quality control for the digitized materials,metadata, and indexing and upload digitized material and associated catalog information into the Online Vault database. You will independently accession new material into the NSRC's collections and provide research librarian support to customers. This will also include actively seeking out improvements to the digitization processes and developing extensive knowledge of the Weapons Production's collections for aiding customers in finding mission critical information quickly. You will learn and implement a machine learning and artificial intelligence tool to efficiently catalog the collection as well as provide mentoring and training to less senior staff.

Library Professional Level 1:

Technical Knowledge:

For this role, you will need experience in operating at least one professional digitizing equipment for either paper, microfilm, microfiche, video, or other media. Experience in populating indices for small to moderate size collections. Experience in populating metadata for archival materials. Demonstrated self-starter with the ability to work independently without direct supervision. Strong attention to detail.

Customer Relations:

You will need experience in customer-focused communication and relations. This includes excellent customer service skills, and the ability to work in a team environment.

Additional Requirements for Library Professional 2:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

Technical Knowledge:

At this level, you must have experience in operating multiple professional digitizing equipment for various media types, such as paper, microfilm, microfiche, video, or other media. This includes developing indices of moderate to large collections. This position will also require experience in creating metadata standards for archival materials and developing a robust catalog that meets the research needs of the weapons production customer.

Customer Relations:

You will need experience handling sensitive situations, using sound and independent judgement. This position will require experience supporting customer requests and managing priorities and deadlines. This includes the creation and maintenance of finding aids, service guides, usage instructions, and research tools to support learning and research.

Training/Certifications:

Certification from the Academy of Certified Archivists is preferred.

Education/Experience for Library Professional 1:

This position requires a Master's in Degree Library and Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association and 2 years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. An American Library Association (ALA) accredited MLS degree; or a Master's degree specializing in archives management, records management, or a related degree is preferred.

Education/Experience for Library Professional 2:

This position requires a Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association and 5 years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. An American Library Association (ALA) accredited MLS degree; or a Master's degree specializing in archives management, records management, or a related degree is preferred.

Desired Qualifications:
Understanding of the weapons program within LANL, along with experience working with classified material in a classified environment
Experience working in a major archival organization, such as the National Archives and Records Administration, a museum, or a library with significant archival holdings
Experience assisting scientists and/or engineers to search for relevant materials in a major university, government, or corporate library
Background in information technology, physics, chemistry, engineering, or material science
Experience with standard digital archival and library cataloging systems
Experience with standard bibliographic tools including bibliographic management software, and digital and print library services
Demonstrated experience in continuous learning to enhance knowledge and required skills

Clearance:

Active DOE "Q" Clearance is highly desired.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q(Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.


*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
