Women in Politics Archivist
The University of Iowa Libraries seeks an organized, intellectually curious, and service-oriented archivist to serve in a newly created position, the Women in Politics Archivist in the Iowa Women’s Archives. The Archivist will work primarily with Iowa Women’s Archives collections and projects with a political focus or history, touching on other collections and projects as needed.
 

Under the general direction of the Curator of the Iowa Women’s Archives, the Women in Politics Archivist will participate in collections acquisition, processing, and donor relations activities. They will liaise with the Digital Scholarship & Publishing Studio to sustain, preserve, and promote digital projects pertaining to the Iowa Women’s Archives, including Hard Won, Not Done: A Salute to Iowa Women Politicians. They will also contribute to instruction, reference, and outreach activities. It is anticipated that the incumbent will be named the Jean Lloyd-Jones and Michal Eynon-Lynch Women in Politics Archivist.


Duties and Responsibilities include:

Process collections, primarily those with a political orientation; including arrangement and description of legacy and recently acquired collections and addenda
Facilitate digitization of Iowa Women’s Archives material
Serve as the digital projects liaison between the Iowa Women’s Archives and the Digital Scholarship & Publishing Studio, especially for Hard Won, Not Done: A Salute to Iowa Women Politicians.
Represent the department in collection development work, especially as it pertains to women in politics.
Provide reference services in the reading room, over the phone, and online; provide instruction to classes and groups; and support day-to-day operations.
Collaborate with colleagues working in areas of collection development, archival and manuscript processing, rare books cataloging, preservation, digitization, and instruction.
Contribute to department-level planning and the formulation of new policies and procedures.
Keep abreast of developments in archival standards and trends, applying new rules, interpretations, and techniques as appropriate.
Contribute to the profession through service, research, publishing, and/or teaching.
Participate in Libraries’ initiatives outside of Special Collections & Archives by serving on Libraries’ and campus committees and contributing to other relevant activities and events.
Actively supports the University of Iowa Libraries commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion (DEAI) in the workplace
Additional job duties as assigned based on individual knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Required Education

A graduate degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent, or a graduate degree in archival studies, or the equivalent combination of graduate degree and archival experience.
 

Required Qualifications:

For appointment at the Specialist Librarian level: two years of professional experience working in a special collections or archives environment, including the physical handling of archival material.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity in an academic environment, in a workplace setting, and/or in the community.
Demonstrated ability to work in a team-based setting where consultation, flexibility, reliability, initiative, creativity, collaboration, and cooperation are essential.
Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
A record of accomplishment in the area of scholarship and/or professional service activities.
Valid driver’s license and the ability to meet and maintain University Driving Policy standards.
 

Desired Qualifications:

Knowledge of the history of politics and political issues, especially of women in politics, as demonstrated through advanced coursework, certification, or prior work experience.
Archival certification including but not limited to the Academy of Certified Archivists (ACA), the Society of American Archivists (SAA), or substantial coursework in archives or records management.
Knowledge of and experience in implementing current trends and best practices in the archival field, including familiarity with technologies and best practices in core functions such as appraisal, description, digitization, preservation, and access.
Experience creating and editing web content in a content management system (CMS) such as WordPress, Omeka, or similar platforms
Experience working with born digital material
