The Houston Public Library seeks an innovative and experienced manger to serve as the Librarian IV Manager of the Houston Metropolitan Research Center (HMRC). Houston Public Library serves a population of 2.2 million citizens through a network of 37 Neighborhood Libraries spread out across the Houston area, a Central Library, and three Special Collections Libraries.
 
The Houston Metropolitan Research Center (HMRC), located in the historic Julia Ideson Building, includes archival and book collections related to Texas and Houston local history. HMRC’s purpose and role is to locate, preserve, and make accessible documentary evidence of Houston's history.
 
The essential duties and functions of the position include but are not limited to the following:
Manage day-to-day operations of the unit, supervising unit staff and assigning projects and duties to staff;
Coordinate with other HPL units and COH departments as directed;
Supervise HMRC staff and lead all areas of staffing, including hiring, training, and staff development;
Participate in workflow improvement, strategic planning, policy development, and decision-making related to library services provided by HMRC, all special collections, and across the HPL system.
Coordinating implementation of the Houston Public Library’s Digitization Program for the unit, including archiving and preserving collections
Respond to budget and statistics inquiries, as it relates to grant-funded projects and required statistics reports;
Advocate for the needs of the HMRC branch to other HPL units, HMRC Friends group, partners, and other stakeholders. 
Guide HMRC collection development policies; programming and outreach activities; and preservation and digitization projects.
Work closely with stakeholders and customers to ensure that programs and services match current research needs and interests;
Other administrative duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Position requires stooping and bending; lifting of library materials up to 20 pounds. Must be able to move freely throughout the library to file/retrieve library materials. Must be able to effectively communicate orally and in writing.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires Master of Library Science degree from a school accredited by the American Library Association.
 
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Four (4) years of experience as a librarian are required, including at least one year of management experience.

MINIMUM LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
A valid Driver's License and compliance with the City of Houston policy on driving (AP 2-2) preferred.

Preference will be given to those who:
Have experience working in a large public library system or similar organization in a decision-making role including knowledge with archives, local history, oral history, and digitization;
Are familiar with local history collections especially Houston and Texas.
Have experience in strategic planning and project management in the fields of archival processing, digitization, rare books collections management, conservation, or exhibits and special events 
Have familiarity with managing grant funded projects
Have experience with common software used to manage archives and special collections, such as ArchivesSpace, ContentDM, and Preservica; 
Have knowledge of rights management, copyright law, and legal issues impacting archival and special collections;
Have Academy of Certified Archivists (ACA) Certification and Records Management Certification;
Have the ability to translate strategic and theoretical concepts into practice;
Possess strong analytical, problem solving, and organizational skills; 
Exhibit strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with others;
Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
