Job Description
The University Libraries seek a visionary Associate Librarian for Special Collections and Archives who will oversee all aspects of the Special Collections and Archives Department, Which is located in the Lindsay-Montague Building on the campus of Virginia State University. Position will report to the Dean, University Libraries, under the working title of Assistant Archivist, the incumbent is responsible for collection development, preservation, organization, description, access, instruction, and outreach for materials held by the libraries, especially special collections and archival materials; will provide administrative oversight and support by setting priorities, supervising staff, managing budget expenditures, developing policies and procedures, and grant writing; will work with Dean, faculty, and staff to set and promote the vision of department to stakeholders, donors, faculty, and researchers; will serve on senior leadership team and integrate work of department with the library as a whole; will contribute to teaching, learning, and research on campus by hosting workshops, providing instruction, and leading seminars using special collections materials; and will help cultivate and maintain ties with local community and heritage by building collections that reflect these relationships.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Incumbent will develop programs and services to acquire, process, curate, and provide access to special collections in a variety of formats; will oversee daily operations; will facilitate discovery of and access to collection information through the development of EAD finding aids, the library website, and other resources; will provide leadership on issues surrounding relevant collection access and digitization in collaboration with relevant library stakeholders; will promote and interpret unique collections through innovative and engaging physical and digital exhibitions, educational programming and instruction, and social media; will assist with grant development; will create a sustainable program to support born-digital archives; and will actively participate in library, university, and/or professional service commitments directly related to the field of special collections, digitization, or academic librarianship.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited university in Library/Information Studies with an emphasis on formal archival education or training; or Master’s degree in American History, African American Studies, or other relevant discipline with experience in archives, archival coursework, or archival certificate; must have supervisory experience and at least two years of professional archives experience; must have demonstrated ability in evaluating, selecting, and processing rare and special collections; must have knowledge of best practices ad national standards such as EAD, DACS, MARC, and Dublin Core; must have knowledge of preservation principles; must have demonstrated ability and initiative in instruction and outreach; must be proficient using MS Office Suite; must have demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills; must have ability to work collaboratively with a team; and have evidence of commitment to public service.
Preferred Qualifications
Certification by the Academy of Certified Archivists is preferred. Experience with ArchivesSpace (or Archon, Archivists Toolkit and Aeon) is preferred. Experience working with web archives and digital repositories is preferred. Evidence of successful project management and grant writing experience is preferred. Coursework in Virginia state history with emphasis on African-American History and culture is preferred.
