Job Summary
The Assistant Archivist and Digitization Specialist works with the curator to make archives resources accessible and discoverable for patrons by managing and processing physical and digital materials, through digitization and digital repository projects, and by assisting with planning, policy development and implementation, and oversight of the day-to-day operations of the archives.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Arranging and describing archives, manuscript, and image collections according to established standards such as DACS, and archives policies and procedures -includes accessioning, processing, preservation, and preparation of finding aids. Prepare archival resources for digitization, manage digital repository workflows, and manage delegated digitization projects and/or project phases with part-time student employees. Processing and preserving electronic records according to established standards Assisting patrons with research questions and finding materials, in the reading room and in responding to email and telephone inquiries Assist the curator with planning, policy development and implementation, and the oversight of day-to-day operations in the archives Working with library staff in developing and/or installing physical and digital exhibitions Contributing content to the Heritage Hall website and blog Maintaining responsibility for the archives in the absence of the curator Other duties as assigned
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Mentoring and supervising part-time student employees and interns
Helping part-time employees and volunteers with digital processes and skill development and other archival processing questions.
SKILL REQUIREMENTS
Demonstrated experience working with digital archives, digital repositories, and/or special collections in an academic environment. Demonstrated knowledge of archival theory and practice and technological applications related to digital repositories, archives, special collections, and records management. Working knowledge of metadata description tools applicable to the archival control of digital collection materials, such as Archivematica, Fedora, ArchivesSpace, Islandora, etc. Demonstrated knowledge of best practices as well as emerging trends for digital repositories, digital archives, and records management. Excellent organizational, interpersonal communication, and project management skills. Ability to create and manipulate metadata. Experience working collaboratively. Working knowledge/hands-on experience with ingest, data management, and access protocols. Strong technical skills: format validation and conversion methods; data integrity techniques and technologies; long-term storage planning; and digital asset management systems. Ability to evaluate, select, and review information resources in relation to curricular and collection needs. Familiarity with preservation theory and current research and practices regarding risks to digital collections, such as technological changes, natural disasters, interoperability of software, and security issues.
Education and Experience:
Master’s degree in archival science, library science, or equivalent program, by the date of appointment. Minimum of two years professional experience required working in archives, digitization, libraries, a research setting, public history, or records management, and experience working with part-time staff, student employees, or volunteers.
