The University Libraries seeks a dynamic and collaborative University Archivist to lead a team of dedicated professionals who strive to collect and preserve the history of the University at Buffalo and to advance scholarship through study and use of the University Archives’ institutional records and historical manuscript collections. The University Archivist provides leadership, vision, and advocacy for the Archives while fostering user-centered reference services and academic engagement to a broad and diverse university and community audience. The University Archivist works collaboratively within the library, across campus, and with external agencies to pursue grant funding and development opportunities to support the University Archives activities. The University Archivist pursues professional development opportunities including research, publication, and professional service activities, to meet library wide and University criteria for tenure.
As the University Archivist, you will:
Contribute to long range strategic planning and development of the mission of the University Libraries, displaying collegiality, leadership, and vision;
Actively engage in outreach to promote the use of the collections, particularly student use of primary source materials;
Create and coordinate dynamic exhibitions, public programs, and publications that promote the university and the use of University Archives;
Facilitate effective working relationships and work collaboratively within the library, across campus, and with external agencies and community groups;
Identify and pursue funding opportunities through grants, donor relations, partnerships, and development opportunities to support University Archives’ activities;
Oversee the day-to-day activities of the University Archives, including supervision of staff and student assistants;
Build and manage institutional records and historical manuscript collections, focusing on the identification and growth of underrepresented areas of the collection;
Oversee the appraisal, acquisition, processing, preservation, and digitization of university records of enduring value in all formats;
Apply and promulgate standards and best practices in providing access to archival and manuscript collections through finding aids and other descriptive means;
Identify and explore emerging technologies that support the capture, preservation, and discovery of the University Archives’ collections;
Work with the heads of the other departments on projects and priorities relating to Special Collections and on monitoring the security and effectiveness of the Special Collections reading room, closed stacks, and other storage facilities to ensure that users’ needs are addressed in a timely fashion, that all materials are protected during use, and that the facility is updated and maintained to promote research and teaching;
Serve as records manager for the University Libraries and participate in campus-wide records management activities and compliance.
Based upon qualifications, experience, the University’s standards for continuing appointment, and Libraries’ standards in librarianship, service, and scholarship, we anticipate appointing the successful candidate at the rank of Senior Assistant or Associate Librarian. The University Archivist will report to the Associate University Librarian for Administration and Distinctive Collections and work with librarians and staff across the University Libraries.
We invite individuals to apply whose perspectives and experiences will enrich and strengthen our organization. The library serves an increasingly diverse constituency of patrons, and our employees, services, collections, and policies should honor and reflect this diversity. We encourage candidates who thrive in a welcoming multicultural environment to apply.
