Become a Certified Archivist (CA)

The Certified Archivist (CA) credential is earned by passing the Certified Archivist Examination and maintaining active membership in the Academy of Certified Archivists (ACA).

The CA designation signifies professional knowledge, competence, and commitment to archival principles and standards.

Path to Certification:

  1. Apply during the open application period
  2. Sit for and pass the Certified Archivist Examination
  3. Activate your credential by paying first-year ACA membership dues
  4. Maintain annual membership and complete recertification every five years

About the Examination

The Certified Archivist Examination consists of 100 multiple-choice questions based on the Role Delineation Statement for Professional Archivists. The exam assesses knowledge and application across eight domains of archival practice, reflecting the responsibilities and competencies required to manage and sustain effective archival programs.

The examination evaluates both theoretical understanding and practical application of professional standards and best practices.

Eligibility

There are no formal educational or professional experience prerequisites to sit for the examination.

ACA is committed to fostering an inclusive and accessible pathway to certification that reflects the diversity of the archival profession in education, experience, career stage, and professional background.

While there are no prerequisites, candidates are strongly encouraged to possess a solid foundation in archival knowledge and professional practice. Successful candidates typically demonstrate the ability to:

  • Apply core archival principles and standards
  • Demonstrate proficiency across all eight practice domains
  • Interpret and apply professional terminology and policies
  • Evaluate archival issues using sound professional judgment

The CA credential is accessible to professionals across sectors, including public, private, nonprofit, academic, and business environments.

After Passing the Examination

Candidates who achieve a passing score may activate the Certified Archivist (CA) credential by remitting first-year ACA membership dues.

Certification remains valid for a five-year cycle, provided the individual:

  • Maintains active ACA membership
  • Completes recertification requirements every five years
