“What is the role of archival certification in the modern work environment?”
As archive work changes from ‘the keeper of paper records’ to a more digital and inclusive profession it is important to recognize and designate archival professionals to show an understanding and formal application of archival practices, regardless of professional title. In today’s changing environment many digital imaging specialist, records managers, and librarians also have the educational and practical experience of archivists that they bring into their work environment every day. The CA designation recognizes their work and contribution to the profession even though their professional title might not reflect that knowledge. Having the designation CA for professionals also helps employers understand that the employees they have, have additional knowledge of information and knowledge that they can use to benefit their programs and projects. For professionally titled archivist, the CA signals to their employer that not only does the person understand and practice good archiving, but that they are continuing to update themselves with the latest trends and professional development inside the field. This enables both professionals and those that are hiring them to more fully understand what an archivist does and the knowledge behind that.
