SUMMARY: The Archives and Special Collections Librarian oversees the University archives and the library’s special collections. Reporting to the Director of the Library, this position administers, preserves, and provides access to the historical and operational records of the university and other archival materials; promotes the use of these materials through instruction and outreach; and supports the research needs of university departments. The Archives and Special Collections Librarian serves as library liaison to selected academic majors and programs, teaches information literacy, and maintains research guides. As a member of the library team, the Archives and Special Collections Librarian helps provide operational support for the library, including on-call assistance on some weekend days, and may work one evening per week during the fall and spring terms. The Archives and Special Collections Librarian is a staff position with faculty status.
This position is exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is not eligible to earn overtime pay or compensatory time off for additional hours worked. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include
Manages, arranges, describes, preserves, and provides access to archival collections of the University including documents, film, photographs, architectural drawings, and digital files.
Manages the digital repository system and creates finding aids based on accepted standards and practices.
Plans and implements digitization projects.
Provides support for a university records retention policy to identify and acquire institutional records of enduring value.
Collaborates with colleagues to secure grants and other external funding for projects.
Provides research and outreach for archives and special collections.
Serves as primary point of contact for all inquiries related to archives and special collections.
Provides reference and research services for the University community, such as Advancement, Alumni Relations, Athletics, and Marketing and Communication, and academic units and initiatives such as the Charlotte Racial Justice Fellows.
Promotes the use of the archives and special collection through physical and digital exhibits, presentations, and social media.
Contributes to the library’s information literacy program by collaborating with faculty to integrate archival and special collections content into the curriculum.
Serves as library liaison to one or more academic majors/programs.
Provides research assistance to students and instruction informed by ACRL guidelines for information literacy, creates and maintains research guides, tutorials, and other instructional materials, and maintains regular communication with faculty and administrators in assigned departments.
May supervise student workers, interns, and volunteers.
Manages all aspects of Special Collections, including acquisitions, processing, preservation, arrangement, description of materials, and deselection.
Provides strategic direction for areas of collection focus.
Develops and communicates policies for the use of Special Collections.
Maintains excellent donor relations.
Participates in library marketing and outreach activities.
Participates in library orientation to various campus groups.
Helps provide operational support for the library, including on-call assistance on some weekend days, occasionally opening or closing the library, and some evening work.
Maintains current knowledge of developments in the field of librarianship.
Serves on institutional and professional committees and in other capacities.
Takes part in professional development activities every year.

Qualifications
Experience, Knowledge & Skills Required
Experience working in an academic library.
Professional experience with the acquisition, management, and preservation of archival collections.
Working knowledge of archival practices and standards, such as DACS, METS, Dublin Core, MODS, XML, EAD, and data management systems such as Archivists Toolkit.
Experience in providing reference and research services for archival materials
Experience in outreach to the university community
Experience with digitization of documents, photos, audio and video recordings, and realia and managing digital content. Knowledge of best practices for digital conversion including the use of scanners, accessibility software, and other technologies
Facility with compiling and reporting statistics.
Knowledge of information literacy guidance from the Association of College and Research Libraries.
Substantial experience with Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, and SharePoint.
Excellent interpersonal skills, approachable, and able to interact in a respectful and positive manner.
Commitment to equitable access to expertise, support, and resources for all constituencies (students, faculty, staff, visitors).
Commitment to working effectively as part of the library team.
Excellent organization and follow-through skills to ensure achievement of objectives within established timeframes, working independently and as a member of a team.
Attention to detail and ability to meet scheduling expectations.
Solid problem-solving skills and the ability to analyze components and arrive at a logical course of action.
ALA-accredited Master of Library and Information Science degree or equivalent.
Experience with a digital repository system
Preferred Experience, Knowledge, & Skills Required
Archivist certification (CA) or focus in archival studies
Teaching or training experience, especially in higher education settings.
Experience with CONTENTdm digital repository system
