Description:
The Montana Historical Society has a full-time, permanent position open for an Archivist 2. The Archives is charged with identifying and collecting non-public records, manuscripts, and documents. The Archives is also responsible, by statute, for the collection, organization and preservation of non-current state government records and non-current local government records of permanent value. Archives staff acquire, analyze, arrange, and preserve these materials to make them available to the public.
Duties:
Responsible for the development and care of existing oral history and manuscript collections and the assessment and acquisitions of new collections.
Determines priority of collections for processing based on knowledge of research needs, agency priorities, historical significance, and professional standards.
Conducts research on and compiles histories of individuals, groups, institutions, or businesses to provide context for newly processed collections.
Produces standardized cataloging in accordance with national library/archives standards for submission to the Montana Historical Society's online catalogs and regional online catalogs.
Develops, enhances, and maintains electronic information database and patron access systems for archival records.
Provides reference service by staffing the reference desk, answering emails, letters, and phone calls. Supervises the use of archives and special collections in the reference room and assists researchers in devising a plan for conducting archival research.
Supervise volunteers working on special projects.
Responds to inquiries regarding preservation of archival materials and advises the public and other managers of archival collections on the appropriate conservation of specific material types.
Qualifications:
Thorough knowledge of modern archival theory, standards and practices and their implementation.
Knowledge of DACS, EAD, and MARC.
Knowledge of collection management software programs.
An understanding of research methods.
Ability to communicate both simple and complex ideas effectively, both orally and in writing.
Archival certification (ACA Certified Archivist, SAA Digital Archives Specialist, SAA Arrangement and Description) preferred but not required.
Education: Master’s in Library Science with Archival and or Records Management emphasis or a Master’s in History, or related field, with at least two years of experience in working in the archives field.
