The Archivist/Curator position is a twelve-month, tenure-track Assistant Librarian position, reporting to the Dean of Library Services. The successful candidate will be experienced and use preservation methods and archival theories for the Calumet Region and Indiana University Northwest. The Archivist will acquire, organize, preserve, develop and digitize historical materials, develop finding aids and supervise volunteers or student workers. The Archivist will identify and cultivate potential donors, showcase special collections for outreach and special projects, and provide reference for the Archives. Staying current with archival trends and new technologies are required to identify improvements and solutions for implementation. This position has liaison responsibilities to academic departments, teaches information literacy sessions and participates in collection development activities for the library. 

Responsibilities:

Arrange and describe archival and manuscript collections, including arranging and describing the collections generated by public and private organizations and personal papers of individuals held in the Calumet Regional Archives; application of preservation measures to the collections while processing them; and preparing finding aids for the collections.

Accession of new collections and additions to current collections, adding to and maintaining collection information in the Calumet Regional Archives’ website.
Acquisitions: locate and acquire new collections and additions to collections.

Reference: provide reference service in person, by telephone, by mail, and email to all users of the Calumet Regional Archives, including IU faculty, students, and staff, and the general public at the local, national and international levels.  

Outreach: provide exhibit design and installation, public events, and presentations to groups on- and off-campus, and special projects to increase the awareness of the Archives.
Investigate, plan, and coordinate the technology required to facilitate the efficient retrieval of and access to archival information.

Administer the Archives, including data collection; supervising staff, student workers, and volunteers; development and maintenance of policies on collection development, management, emergency procedures, etc.

Participate with library faculty in decision-making on library issues, and other administrative duties.

Oversee the establishment of a university archives program for campus records.
Engage with and contribute to the profession through research/scholarship and service related to professional and scholarly interests, including publication, presentation, and committee work, consistent with a tenure-track faculty position.

Engage in professional development to remain abreast of trends and new technologies in archives and enhance skills in other library-related work.

Provide the Library Dean with data and reports pertinent to the Archives. 

Establish effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the public.
Work independently with minimal supervision.

Analyze job tasks and the state of the Archives, offer solutions for improvement, and collaborate with others for implementation. 

Serve as a liaison to various academic departments with the responsibility for collection development and library instruction.

Required Qualifications:

ALA-accredited M.L.S. or M.A. U.S. History, Archival Studies or Preservation Management 
Formal training in archival theory and best practices
Minimum of two years experience in archives, manuscripts repository, or special collections
Knowledge of current and emerging trends, issues, workflows, and best practices associated with digital and digitized content in an archival environment
Basic knowledge of archival preservation issues and techniques
Good interpersonal skills
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented organization
Ability to meet the requirements of a tenure-track appointment by exhibiting excellence in job performance and satisfactory performance in professional development/research and service


Preferred Qualifications:
   
Familiarity with electronic archival resources and content management tools, such as ArchivesSpace
Demonstrated understanding of the nature of scholarly research and publishing
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Knowledge of American history and historiography
Knowledge of Northwest Indiana history
Academy of Certified Archivists certification
