The Academy of Certified Archivists is led by four officers (president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer) and five regents. Regents are analogous to board or council members in other organizations. However, in addition to board duties, each regent oversees a specific Academy function and serves as chair of the committee responsible for that function. The regents are:
Academy members elect all officers and regents to two-year terms except the president, who serves one year as vice-president, one year as president, and a third year as immediate past president/regent for nominations. Together, the officers and regents comprise the Board of Regents, which governs the Academy. Academy members also elect one member of their Nominating Committee each year to a two-year term. During the second year of their term, they chair the committee. The Nominating committee therefore consists of two elected members and the Regent for Nominations, with the senior elected member acting as chair. In addition to the standing Nominating Committee, the Academy has one ad hoc committee and two ad hoc task forces.
